Slices, Hooks And Bunkers…It’s All Good

If you’re into golf and fundraisers, mark June 12 as a day for both. Eighteen holes of golf at the Rouge Golf Course, a grand buffet dinner, goody bag, entertainment, on course beverage carts, contests, prizes and trophies for only $100.00.

It’s the third annual Friends of Bates Academy Golf Tournament (best ball scramble) to benefit the students at Bates Academy for Gifted and Talented Students.

Students at the school continually strive for excellence which has earned the school the honor of being recognized as the top achieving elementary and middle school in the Detroit Pubic School District.

It’s what’s expected of the Bates students even though they don’t have all of the tools and resources that some other schools have. In a recent New York Times article on the inadequacy of funding for gifted and talented programs, Michigan schools were singled out noting that “state aid for gifted students fell from more than $4 million a year [in 2002] to less than $250,000.”

That means that funds have to come from other sources. Enter The Friends of Bates Academy which is composed of business and community leaders and parents of Bates students whose mission it is to raise the funds to help support the development of the students at Bates Academy.

It is the hope of the group that more will follow their lead in the support of excellence at the school, and what better way than a fun-filled afternoon.

Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. Shotgun start is at 1:30. If you’d just like to come for the dinner, it’s only $25.00. For more information call 248-302-9787 or 248-443-5055.
