Location: Office of School Social Work Service
Provides appropriate school social work interventions for deaf and hard of hearing students who demonstrate severe social and emotional problems which interfere with learning.
Masters in Social Work, Licensed by the State of Michigan, Full or Temporary School Social Work Approval by the State of Michigan and Advance Level rating on SCPI (Sign Communication Proficiency Interview).
Minimum of two (2) years post-masters degree experience working with school-aged children and families. Extensive experience within the deaf community and knowledge of Deaf Culture. Demonstrate fluency in expressive and receptive Advanced Sign Language skills as measured by Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) and English. Demonstrate understanding of the implications of deafness. Experience working with deaf and hard of hearing students of varying abilities at a variety of grade levels.
Regular Attendance is critical; must have an exemplary attendance record.
Must be able to verify whether U.S. citizen, resident alien, or otherwise authorized to accept employment in the U.S.
Must be physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined with or without accommodations.
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Office of School Social Work the School Social Worker-Deaf and Hard of Hearing will:
1. Implement the program as outlined in the student’s IEP.
2. Provides direct school social work services to referred students who have serious social and emotional problems which interfere with learning.
3. Coordinate and facilitate crisis intervention and response program.
4. Must have the ability to develop and prepare, Individual Education Plans, Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team Reports, Evaluation Review Reports, Functional Behavior Assessment, Behavior Intervention Plans, Manifestation Determination Reviews, 504’s and other special education reports pertaining to student needs and issues.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of community resources to provide support and services to deaf and hard of hearing population.
6. Serves as a member of the Resource Coordinating Team (the problem-solving vehicle for the school). Ability to work with teachers, and other student support personnel in the child study/early intervention process.
7. Provides assessment and intervention services for special education students.
8. Develop, coordinate and facilitate intervention and prevention groups for student and parents (i.e. grief, conflict resolution, divorce etc.)
9. Demonstrate general knowledge of disability areas in special education with specific knowledge in emotional impairment and autism.
10. Maintain complete case files with required documents on all active cases.
11. Demonstrate professionalism in dealing with confidential issues.

All fingerprinting appointments will be scheduled by Detroit Public Schools, Human Resources Department.
