Location: Department of Literacy, Central Administration Offices
Successful candidates with sufficient preparation beyond the Masters Degree may be eligible for the advanced differential.
Candidates for this position must be able to satisfy the legal requirements necessary for teaching in the State of Michigan and possess a Master’s Degree in Reading preferred from an accredited institution. Also, an equivalent of thirty (30) semester hours beyond the Master’s Degree from an accredited institution is preferred. In addition, candidates for this position must show evidence of graduate credit in five (5) of the following areas: School Administration and Organization; Curriculum Development/Planning; School Law and School Finance; School Community Relations; Supervision; Research and Evaluation; Staff Development; and Educational Psychology and Reading Instruction.
Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years successful certified teaching experience in reading, experience as a Reading First teacher or Literacy Coach, and administrative experience preferred not required.
Regular Attendance is critical; must have an exemplary attendance record.
Must be able to verify whether U.S. citizen, resident alien, or otherwise authorized to accept employment in the U.S.
Must be physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined with or without accommodations.
Personal/ Professional: Candidates should be a well-adjusted individual who has demonstrated potential for leadership ability in past assignments.
Under the direction of the Executive Director, The Department of Literacy, the Program Supervisor will:
1. Provide support for the implementation of Reading First Initiative in twenty-seven Detroit Public Schools.
2. Monitor the Reading First grant funds by working closely with the Michigan Department of Education and a Detroit Public Schools’ compliance officer.
3. Serve as liaison between Central Office administration, the Reading First schools and the Michigan Department of Education.
4. Monitor the implementation of the SRA Open Court Reading program in the Reading First Schools for grades K-3 and Special Education.
5. Work with Literacy Coaches, administrators and school staffs to collect, examine and use student data from DIBELS and ITBS to drive classroom instruction in order to achieve exponential literacy growth.
6. Monitor and support the Literacy Coaches in meeting the District and Reading First mandates to increase reading achievement.
7. Provide professional development for Literacy Coaches and Reading First staffs in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Education.
8. Attend regular meeting with literacy coaches at the state level.
9. Candidates should be a well-adjusted individual who has demonstrated potential for leadership ability in past assignments.
10. All other duties as directed by the Executive Director of the Office of Literacy and the Michigan Department of Education.
