Job Title: ASSISTANT GENERAL COUNSEL (No Child Left Behind)

Salary Range: 72,420 - 108,528 (annually)

Represents Detroit Public Schools on legal matters, including civil litigation. Discusses legal issues and provides support to department managers that will assist them in meeting business objectives.

Qualifications

Education:

Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school and currently be licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan. Candidates must submit proof of degree and good standing with the Michigan Bar Association. Additional graduate level education (e.g. MBA, EdD, PhD) is desirable. Graduate level education in areas of elementary and secondary education is a plus.

Experience:

Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years progressively more experience as a practicing attorney in education law, specifically, regulations related to administration of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) required. Minimum two (2) years experience in a school district, institution of higher education, non-profit or government agency required. Minimum of two (2) years experience working in a law firm or general corporate legal setting required. Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills required along with an executive presence to effectively interact with senior level managers, individuals throughout the school district, as well as, individuals external to the district. Candidates must have a broad understanding of elementary and secondary education issues, as well as, the legal issues of ESEA and NCLB administration. Must be proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Attendance:

Regular Attendance is critical; must have an exemplary attendance record.

Citizenship:

Must be able to verify whether U.S. citizen, resident alien, or otherwise authorized to accept employment in the U.S.

Physical Condition:

Must be physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined with or without accommodations.


Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the General Counsel will perform the following duties and have the following responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

1. Provides legal advice to the General Counsel, office heads and school administrators;

2. Participates in case preparation and makes recommendations to the General Counsel concerning litigation strategies;

3. Reviews and submits recommendations to the General Counsel for approval of all contracts between vendors and the school district;

4. Provides in-service training to staff;

5. Attends Cabinet meetings as directed by General Counsel;

6. Supervises the investigation of actual, threatened or potential litigation;

7. Drafts or reviews proposed language for contracts, policies and procedures;

8. Carries out other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the General Counsel.

Security Clearance:

All fingerprinting appointments will be scheduled by Detroit Public Schools, Human Resources Department.
