The goal of work-based learning is to assist students in making the transition from the role of classroom student to that of a skilled employee. The following options are available to Detroit Public Schools students:
Practicm is a non-paid work experience for students during their first year of training, especially at Career Tech centers.
Co-op is a paid work experience for senior students or 2nd year program completers. The work assignment is in the area of the students training focus in grades 10-11. Students must be at least 16 years of age and be able to work 15-20 hours a week. Supervised is provided by a Co-op Coordinator from their school and by a Worksite Supervisor. Graduation credit is received for time spent at the worksite. A formal agreement and training plan are required.
Apprenticeship is a paid experience whereby the student is employed in an occupation recognized as an apprenticeable trade and is registered by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training in accordance wit the standards established by the Bureau. A formal agreement and training plan are required. Students training in the Building Trades area at Randolph Career Tech Center are candidates for this type of work experience opportunity.
Internships are usuallya summer experience between grades 11 and 12 allowing students to spend weeks of full days on the job in the area of his or her training. The Academy of Finance at Golightly Career and Technical Center is an example of one program that includes a formal Internship experience for students.
The student is placed in a school setting supervised by a teacher/coordinator which allows exploration and learning. The purpose of this non-paid work experience is awareness and exploration. Examples of placement sites include school offices, classrooms and labs.
These services provide program completers with help in seeking employment (full- or part-time) after graduation.
