Entrepreneurship 2000 is committed to providing youth with the knowledge skills, and resources necessary to include business ownership as a viable career option.
Entrepreneurship 2000 is a standards based curriculum integrating academic and technical skills with entrepreneurship training. The Michigan Small Business Development Center and various financial institutions support the project, which is administered by the Detroit Public Schools through Detroit Empowerment Zone Title XX funding. This program is designed for high school students with the goal of acquiring financial resources to start their own business after graduation.
Many young people demonstrate the leadership, determination, competitive attitude and high energy needed to become successful entrepreneurs at an early age. In this economy, all students should possess an understanding of business ownership. Many large corporations are downsizing their workforce and much of the job creation in the early 1990's has been in the small business sector.

The Empowerment zone is a new approach to urbanrevitaliztion. An 18.35 square mile area across the southwest, central, and near east section of Detroit have been designated as this citys' Empowerment zone. This area populated by approximately 101,000 residents and 9,000 businesses, receives federal grant monies to improve the quality of life for residents through tax breaks and other incentives. Detroit joins other major cities such as Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago and New York in revitalizing a specified geographic area of the city by enticing businesses to relocate or expand within the Empowerment Zone boundaries.
Entrepreneurship 2000 provides schools within the Empowerment Zone and its residents the visionary curriculum needed for students to start their own business upon graduation. Included in this unique program is exposure to positive work ethics, work distribution at home, and alternative work schedules while extending and strengthening personal relationships with family and friends. Time management, strong character building, program-solving techniques, and family appreciation are topics covered while students learn to balance work and family in this economy. This designed prototype serves as a model for other schools in the district, state and nation to emulate.
