Career Initiative Alignment (CIA)

The Career Initiative Alignment for Detroit Public Schools embodies four goals identified in "Building Brighter Futures," the Detroit Board of Education's School Improvement Plan. Because all students will seek employment, development and implementation of a district-wide system that focuses on the goals of three distinct grants administered in the Office of Career and Technical Education-Career Preparation System, Secondary Carl D. Perkins and Tech Prep-has been instituted. A combined CIA Action Plan has been approved by the Michigan Department of Career Development for a three-year period ending June 2004. Each component in the CIA alignment serves a particular segment of the student population.

Career Preparation System

The Career Preparation System is a system of programs and services to assist all K-12 students achieve success in a career of choice and lifelong learning

Secondary Carl D. Perkins (CTE)

This refers to a state-approved program of organized educational activities that provides individuals with academic and technical knowledge and skills to prepare students in grades 9-12 to prepare for further education for careers.

Tech Prep

Teach Prep refers to a program that provides technical preparation to students in grades 11-14, each having an Education Development Plan that combines two years of secondary and two years of post-secondary education in a sequential course of study carried out under a written program articulation agreement.
