OVERVIEW
OF REGION SERVED
The Detroit Mathematics and Science Centers serve
the School District of the City of Detroit, with a population just over
a million people. Detroit includes the eighth largest district in the
Nation and the largest in the State of Michigan. Students in the Detroit
Public Schools are a microcosm of diverse talent upon which the United
States will depend in the not too distant future.
MISSION
The Detroit Mathematics and Science Centers will
function to improve the quality of mathematics and science education for
all Detroit Students and will provide a foundation of skills, knowledge,
and attitudes that will enable them to function and live successfully
in a technological society.
LEADERSHIP
The centers provide support in the form of consultants,
resource teachers, and supervisors in mathematics and science education.
The staff provides support, technical assistance, and access to the latest
developments in mathematics and science education. The centers function
to create an infrastructure with human and financial resources to coordinate
and disseminate mathematics and science programs designed to improve mathematical
and scientific literacy for all students.
STUDENT SERVICES
The
Centers offer systems that provide students with academic and emotional
support. The Centers' efforts proceed from the expectation that all students
can and will succeed. Programs include Saturday and summer academies,
research apprenticeship programs, Gifted and Talented Super Saturdays,
advanced studies, academic gaming, science fairs, Detroit Area Pre-College
Engineering Program and Science Connection. The following outreach sites
are used to maximize learning: Northwestern High School Science Center,
Breithaupt Career & Technical Center, Golightly Career & Technical Center,
Randolph Career & Technical Center, Randolph Career & Technical Center,
Kellogg Resource Science Center, and Golightly Horticulture Center (Belle
Isle).
CURRICULUM SUPPORT
The Detroit Mathematics and Science Centers' programs
support core curriculum and alignment activities that are informed by
national and state standards in mathematics and science. Curricula offered
in mathematics and science are comprehensive, challenging, engaging and
technically sound.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The
centers provide services to parents and the broader community. Parents
are engaged as essential partners in the learning process. Meaningful
and varied roles are available for parents actively to support their children's
learning in mathematics and science. A variety of community partners provide
services necessary for sustained support of Center programs, including
resources and contexts for real-world applications of content learned.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Detroit Centers provide coordinated programs
of sustained staff development to mathematics and science teachers that
promote the delivery of quality instruction for all students. Teachers
are prepared in content and strategies that facilitate improved student
achievement.
RESOURCE CLEARINGHOUSE
The Detroit Centers provide resources to teachers,
parents, and the community. Minigrants are provided to teachers to assist
in implementing learned strategies. Databases are maintained which include
Center programs and best practices.
GOVERNANCE
The Centers are a program of the Detroit Public
Schools. Administrative responsibility for the Centers' programs lies
in the Division of Educational Services. The Office of Mathematics and
the Office of Science has responsibility for program development, with
input from Area and school, staff, parents, and the community.
