Mission
The mission for the Office of Career and Technical Education is to provide all students completing the Detroit Public Schools educational system with the necessary academic, technical and work behavior knowledge and skills for success in a career of their choice and lifelong learning.
Goals
The goals of Career-Technical Education are organized using seven interconnecting components:
- Academic Preparation: To integrate academics in a career context using authentic workplace applications and expectations to make learning more relevant, improve student academic achievement, and create greater career options.
- Career Development: To ensure that students, with their parents, will be prepared to make informed choices about their careers.
- Workplace Readiness: To ensure that students acquire technological and employability skills to help learners move into the workplace and/or continuing education in order to pursue their career goals.
- Professional and Technical Education: To provide options for advanced specialized programs at colleges, universities, in the military, and technical/trade/preparatory schools through collaboration and written curriculum articulation agreements between K-12 and higher education institutions.
- Work-Based Learning: To provide students with a combination of school-based preparation and supervised worksite experiences designed in collaboration with business/industry to enable students to acquire attitudes, knowledge, and skills for career and other life roles in real work settings.
- School/Program Improvement: To collaborate and foster relationships among education, government, labor, business and industry to strengthen the District’s regional career preparation plan.
- Accountability: To ensure effective and efficient operation in evaluating, preparing and reporting of data to meet state and federal guidelines.
