Meal Programs

The Office of Food Services is committed to supporting the educational development of Detroit Public School (DPS) students by providing hot, delicious and nutritious meals. On-site preparation ensures that meals are served hot in compliance with Federal, State and local Health Department regulations. All menus adhere to the guidelines of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Breakfast Program

Universal Breakfast

BreakfastBreakfast is the most important meal of the day. The Detroit Public Schools is the first school district in the country to make available the Breakfast at "No Charge Program" to all students. The breakfast meals are served at the beginning of the school day either in the classroom or the lunchroom. Numerous studies continue to show a direct correlation between eating breakfast and improved learning and overall student performance.

Lunch Programs

Component Meals

Component Meals contain all the elements of a nutritious, well-balanced meal. Entrees are pre-cooked, plated, frozen, and delivered directly to schools. The meals are heated on-site and each item is served separately in individually sized packages. The meals are accompanied with fresh fruit, vegetables and bread; an added treat helps to make mealtime fun and exciting. These meals are available in most elementary schools

Heat & Serve meals

What's cooking! DPS is happy to provide fresh cooked food items with our Heat & Serve program. Meals are heated, served fresh and hot on site to students. This meal program is found throughout the District at schools that do not have full service kitchens.

One World Café

One World CaféOne World Café is a dining concept designed to create a retail-like environment for schools. It encompasses creative, cutting edge graphics, select merchandising elements and expanded food concepts that meet the wants and needs of today's students. This dining concept is available in select high schools throughout the District.

12 Spot

In an effort to connect with the preferences and behaviors of our middle school student customers, we have designed a branded program that is specified to their needs.

  • The 12 Spot is a place in school where middle school students can hangout with their friends in an environment which reflects their lifestyle throughout the year
  • Offers in an expedient manner a large variety of favorite foods
  • Integrates sports, music and seasonal activities into images to create a relevant and trendy atmosphere

The 12 Spot features exciting and healthy new menu items, but it offers more than just great food choices. The 12 Spot is also defined by effective environmental components:

  • Bright colors painted on the walls
  • Lighting and music
  • Updated and creative merchandising materials and techniques
  • Food packaging and presentation
  • Fun images of sports, food and groups of friends that change with the seasons
  • Casual uniforms worn by the 12 Spot food service team

12 Spot recipes are not only tasty and fun to eat, but they also follow the USDA government guidelines, providing the appropriate proportion size and nutritional content that growing tweens need. Over 60% of the recipes have fewer than 30% calories from fat. Drew Middle School currently has 12 Spot.

U.B.U. Lounge

The U.B.U. Lounge creates a comfortable and personable setting for students, and even faculty and parents to gather and share conversation and ideas.

  • It is the oasis on school property that provides a universally appealing environment where every student fits in and feels connected because it understands and offers the food and variety that students like best and refuels them physically and emotionally to get through the day.
  • The U.B.U. Lounge is a place for high school students to eat, express themselves and reenergize with their friends.
  • The brand invites students to come as they are letting them know that in this environment, all we ask is that U.B.U.

Redford and Southwestern High Schools have the U.B.U. Lounge.

FUEL

The campaign taps into the unbridled enthusiasm and motivation of youth (their fuel, their octane). If students FUEL up on good stuff, they will have the energy to do the things they love to do. FUEL is supported by four key elements:

  • Energy – benefits of a healthy lunch
  • Friends – making the cafeteria a vibrant place
  • Value – money saved for other activities
  • Skipping Lunch – not to be “preachy” when reminding students that skipping meals is not good for them
