Management of special projects is an essential service to the Detroit Public Schools. the Projects Management group is responsible for planning, estimating, and implementing repair and renovation projects. Projects Management complements Building Trafes and Engineering Services by handling repair and renovation projects that are not within the scope of in-house staff. Projects Management coordinates all their work through the Service Response Center to ensure the effective use of Detroit Public Schools resources adn eht efficient delivery of services.
Repairs handled by the Projects Management group are initiated using the same procedures as all other facilities services repair request. The Service Response prioritizes repair requests and forwards them to the appropiate hub for investigation. If the hub and District Wide Trade groups determine the repair is not within their scope, they forward the request to Projects Management.
Renovations to a building are requested using a Facilities Alteration Request form, available on the DPS website. The form shoudl be completerd, signed by the engineer and principal, and sent to the attention of Allen Gigliotti, Facilities Services. Any funding for the project available from the school's funds should also be noted on the Facilities Alteration Request. Projects Manegement will then develop preliminary drawings and obtain estimates so a funding decision can be made. If a project is funded, the Projects Management group will develop bid documents, identify contractor and oversee the project through to completion.
Because of the complexity and cost of special projects, planning and securing funding can take some time. All projects must be carefully analyzed to determine the impact on the learning environment and how the project fits with long-term facility plans for the District.
