Overview

Detroit Public Schools offers a range of specialized instructional and health services to students found eligible for services. The objective of our service is to provide students the opportunity to participate and achieve their potential in our schools.

For the 2009-10 school year, the Department of Students Support Programs and Specialized Services is re-organized under the Chief Academic and Accountability Officer, Dr. Barbara Byrd-Bennett. Sherry Ulery, the Deputy Chief Academic and Accountability Officer, oversees the Department of Student Support Programs and Specialized Services.

Vision Statement

The Detroit Public School District’s mission is to create Centers of Excellence in every school in every neighborhood and is committed to providing a rigorous, high quality education to all students that will enable them to flourish in a diverse society. Students with special needs will be provided the supports, interventions and enrichment activities in the least restrictive environment, ensuring their access to and participation in the varied opportunities DPS provides. This access to instructional and other support services will result in every individual maximizing their potential to successfully participate in school, work, and community life.


Mission

The mission of Student Support Programs and Specialized Services is to provide a coordinated system of structures, policies, practices and professional development to ensure that students are the recipients of a seamless delivery of support programs and specialized services appropriate to their needs.


Goals

  1. Ensure the appropriate implementation of the Detroit Public Schools’ curriculum as measured by district, state and national assessment instruments.
  2. Ensure coordination and collaboration of internal and external support service providers for seamless service delivery.
  3. Enlarge leadership capacity for the implementation of research-based prevention and intervention models that result in safe school environments and enhanced academic and social adjustment of students.
  4. Ensure equitable educational programs and services for students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment by assisting schools in maximizing achievement accountability and maintaining compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  5. Ensure managerial and fiscal accountability for the multiple funding sources supporting the district’s support and specialized services.
